What to expect in your Post-Partum review at 6 months and beyond:
I understand that life can feel very busy after having a baby, and it’s common for your own health to take a back seat during this time. However, it’s never too late to focus on yourself, and I’m really glad you’re choosing to take this time for your wellbeing. Your Post-Partum review will include:
-
After completing a thorough assessment, I will discuss any areas that may benefit from further treatment or additional evaluation in future sessions. At the start, you will always be asked if there is a specific area of concern you would like to focus on. Depending on your symptoms and priorities, we may spend more time on one area than another to ensure the session is tailored to your needs.
If there are multiple contributing factors, we will prioritise them together based on your symptoms and goals, and work through them in a structured way.
-
This involves an internal vaginal examination, which allows us to assess how your pelvic floor is functioning following childbirth. Through this assessment, we can evaluate the strength and tone of your pelvic floor muscles, which play an important role in bladder and bowel function, as well as certain pelvic pain conditions. We can also check for any signs of prolapse that may require further management.
This examination is only carried out with your full consent. If you would prefer not to have this done during your appointment, that is completely fine and we can adjust the session accordingly.
-
After pregnancy, it is common to develop a diastasis recti, which is a separation of the Rectus Abdominis muscles. This can affect core function, breathing, and pelvic floor support.
We will assess for this to determine whether there is a separation present and whether it would benefit from targeted rehabilitation to support optimal recovery and function.
-
If you have had a caesarean section, we will assess how your scar is healing, including its mobility and function. We will also consider how this may be affecting other aspects of your recovery, such as your breathing and pelvic floor function, to ensure a holistic approach to your rehabilitation.
-
Pregnancy and childbirth can have a significant impact on breathing patterns, which in turn can influence other aspects of the body. This includes pain levels, pelvic floor function, and recovery following a caesarean section scar.
We will take this into account as part of a holistic assessment to better understand how these systems are working together.
-
I often recommend a follow-up session so we can begin addressing these areas in more detail. However, if you choose not to book a follow-up, you will still receive tailored advice based on today’s findings and discussion.
You will also be sent a report via email outlining the assessment findings and recommendations for ongoing management and rehabilitation.
